Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the incident is said to have taken place on the corners of Gordon Road and 5th Street.

It's alleged that the male motorist, who was involved in an accident with someone else, was attended to by a group of officers who argued with him regarding the expired license disc of his vehicle.

The officers wanted to impound his vehicle, but the motorist is said to have refused.

The argument escalated into an altercation between the motorist and an officer, and followed by the alleged assault by officers.

Fihla says the motorist sustained injuries to his head and torso.

A thorough and impartial investigation is now underway.

"The JMPD does not condone such behaviour from its members, and we must take immediate action to address this matter.

"The JMPD acknowledges the seriousness of the matter and to effectively address this incident. The JMPD encourages the motorist to come forward by contacting the JMPD Internal Affairs Unit Acting Director Joseph Mokala on 0825523704 to thoroughly investigate the situation, determine the facts, and hold those responsible accountable."
