The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) says the Selby Bridge on the M2 Highway in Johannesburg is safe for use.

The agency's Siyabonga Nodu says reopening the Selby Bridge showcases that JRA can handle projects of such magnitude.

Nodu was speaking at the re-opening of the M2 Selby Bridge on Monday morning - after 8 months of emergency repair work.

Close to 12800 motorist are estimated to use the highway every hour to commute across the city.

"We really feel proud that we have been able to manage this. It's not the end, more needs to happen," says Nodu.

The M2 was closed between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Street in February this year.

Nodu says one of the reasons the reconstruction of the bridge took 8 months to complete, is because the bridge was build in the 60s and the city was lucky to find an engineer who worked on the bridge.
