WATCH: One arrested, three injured in Pietermaritzburg school stabbing

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested the man who stabbed three people with a screwdriver at the Alston Primary School in Pietermaritzburg.

The incident happened during school hours in full view of pupils on Wednesday.


The suspect entered the school and started stabbing a security guard, a bystander tried to intervene, but he was also stabbed.


Another man who had a toy gun fired several shots in the air trying to scare off the suspect, but he was also stabbed.


Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the suspect is under police guard at the hospital.


"Police arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect who is 40 years old and was charged with assault with grievous bodily harm. The victims were taken to the hospital for medical attention, and they are in stable condition. At this stage, it is unclear if the suspect is mentally disturbed, and we are investigating."


 The Provincial department has dispatched psycho-social workers to provide support to pupils and school staff.


“It’s troubling that our learners should be subjected to this kind of violence. Our teachers and staff are also worried that their lives are at risk. I trust the police to do their work to ensure that a conviction is secured and that jail becomes the final destination for the perpetrator,” said Education MEC Mbali Frazer.
