[WATCH] Parktown Boys SGB to remain for now: Lesufi
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The parents of Parktown Boys’ High School have decided not to disband the school governing body (SGB).
Briefing journalists after meeting with the school’s parents, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said parents felt it would be inappropriate to dissolve SGB before the report is finalized.
Lesufi met with parents following the death of 13-year-old Enock Mpianzi, who died during the Johannesburg school's grade 8 orientation camp at Nyathi Bush and River Break in North West.
Parents ask media to leave Parktown Boys' High meeting
The parents of pupils at the school said they did not feel comfortable raising issues in front of the media, with some also blaming the media for not reporting accurately on the events at the orientation camp. The meeting came in the wake of the death of 13-year-old Enock Mpianzi, who died during a grade 8 orientation camp on Brits last week.
The parents did however acknowledge that the SGB needs to account.
“We indicated if we can come across information that is damning, we will reconvene,” said Lesufi.
The department has appointed an independent law firm to probe the incident, with Lesufi saying those found to have been negligent in the death of Mpianzi should be arrested.
“That is why the police are involved, that is the mandate of the police. It is not just about going to jail. If we are negligent and people are suing us, we have to go to those people and make them pay,” Lesufi said.
