WATCH: SA economy 'on knife's edge' as Godongwana tables budget
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
All eyes will be on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on Wednesday when he tables his maiden budget speech.
The highly anticipated address comes amid renewed hopes of economic recovery, following months of hardship brought on by a number of factors.
The Covid-19 pandemic is top of mind with respect to factors that tanked the already ailing South African economy.
The July unrest and corruption also contributed to the country’s fiscal woes.
But economists are cautiously optimistic that Godongwana’s policy commitments will bring the country out of its rut.
Efficient Group economist Francois Stofberg believes the South African economy is at a turning point.
“We’re on a knife edge, a critical point. And I know we’ve been saying that for quite some time but things have started to move away from this trough that we’ve been in and the wrong direction of long term policies and we’re starting to move in the right direction.”
Stofberg sat down with JacaNews to unpack more of his expectations, including a need to bring business closer, ensuring the ease of doing business in the country and a change in labour policy.
