[WATCH]: Steenhuisen in Ukraine: SA can no longer ignore the impact of the conflict
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says South Africa should start to pressure for peace and an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Steenhuisen landed in war-torn Ukraine on Monday for a six-day fact-finding mission.
Negotiations continue as various heads of state mediate for peaceful negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, with no end in sight to the escalating attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Steenhuisen visited refugee camps and met with various stakeholders in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
He says the effects of the war will be felt by many globally and in South Africa.
“We have just arrived down the outskirts of Kyiv after spending the day travelling from Lviv and what you see is the distraction of family surveillant targets, the whole way is sides of Russian tanks and that’s the first thing you see.
Ukraine has now become the new frontier of freedom in the world and the backstop against terror and imperialism. It’s important that the world, particularly in Africa, understand what impact this is going to have on our continent, as South Africans what our country is going to be and start to pressure peace, pressure for an end to this distraction war, which is going to have knock-on effects on the rest of the world,” says Steenhuisen.
