The Department of Basic Education (DBE) in Gauteng will be using technology to combat cheating in the 2019 matric exams.

Candidates will be writing the final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams from 16 October to 28 November.

MEC Panyaza Lesufi says: "We are combat-ready."

He says the training of invigilators will allow them to track new technology that can be used to try and cheat.

"It's very, very important to train invigilators because with technology gone are the day when you just walk around the ward to see if learners are cheating," he says, noting that earpods, watches, and caps can all be used to try and cheat.

Lesufi says this will be the last year that learners are given two chances to write the exam and this year Gauteng has 1007 centres registered to administer exams, 667 of which are at schools and 11 at correctional services facilities.
