The police in Gauteng are investigating the theft of copper cables by suspects who dug a trench right in front of the local police station in Reiger Park.
The incident, which was capture on video, took place in full view of the police officers.
Gauteng police says the station management has instituted disciplinary action against the officers who failed to act while the suspects were stealing the cables.
Additional officers have since been deployed to the police station.
Reiger Park ward councillor Edith Klaasen says they have been dealing with the problem of cable theft for months.
"We have been struggling with this cable theft ever since last year July. At first, it was during the night, our patrollers used to have hectic fights with them on a nightly basis. And then on Wednesday it just spiralled out of control, they took out all the cables.
“As you have seen on social media, that's exactly what happened.”
Klaasen says suspects have been arrested.
"I have spoken to the station commander and there were arrests made. I cannot say how many arrests, but there were arrests made.”
