Masina said on Sunday that he has decided to throw his weight behind Pule Mabe.

“We have been engaging with the leadership of the provinces, the leadership of Gauteng. And we have agreed that we should support comrade Pule as TG. As you know we all had fully-fledged campaigns in our structures of the organisation.

“So, we have agreed to give him support. Unfortunately, at the time we agreed the ballot was printed and the people were already voting. But we have demobilised so that we don’t divide our support in as far as the outcome is for the position of the treasurer-general. We were not under any duress, nor were we instructed by any bishops in the ANC to take this decision.”

The contest for the position of treasurer is now down to three candidates, Mabe, political activist Bejani Chauke and Gwen Ramokgopa.
