Most water supply protests due to inadequate communication: Majodina
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has urged municipalities to improve their communication around water supply issues.
Briefing the media on the department’s plans on Monday, Majodina said most protests start due to poor communication from the municipalities.
“We want to encourage our municipalities to communicate with the residents. Most of the protests are caused by a lack of communication. When there will be a maintenance service to water pipes, the community must be informed in advance.”
At the same time, Majodina warned that the water demand continues to increase.
"Some communities have 100% access, and some have zero per cent access. Communities are often forced to obtain water from sources that are polluted and contain dangerous animals. The deteriorating municipal water and sanitation service is one of the causes that our people are unable to get water as expected."
The testing of water samples has also begun in Johannesburg following reports of contaminated water in the Fleurhof area.
"We are working with Joburg municipality," Majodina said.
"They are taking samples we are going to hear from them how far the investigation is to make sure that we put the situation to rest."
