"It appears that the vehicle may have left the road travelling in the direction of Hout Bay before plunging over the cliff into the surf, possibly in the early hours of this [Friday] morning," NSRI station commander Bruce Davidson said in a statement.

He was found trapped inside the vehicle, which was lying among rocks in shallow water.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

"No additional persons were found in or around the vehicle and it is suspected that the vehicle may have only had one occupant," said Davidson.

The cause of the accident was not known and police have opened an inquest into the incident.

In a separate incident, a fisherman was injured when he fell off the Knysna Lagoon train bridge in the Western Cape on Friday, NSRI station commander Jerome Simonis said in a statement.

"Our NSRI Knysna volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft JAYTEE III and on arrival on scene found the EMS [Emergency Management Services] paramedics treating the man for a head injury on the lagoon banks below the train bridge," said Simonis.

The man was taken to hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the accident was not known.
