‘We are not preparing for war’ - SANDF moves 50 'mambas' from Bloem to Pretoria
The South African National Defence Force (Sandf) has confirmed the movement of 50 Infantry Personnel Carrier vehicles from Bloemfontein to Pretoria.
The 'mambas', as they are affectionately known, were being repaired with the help of technicians from Cuba.
The convoy left De Brug depot on Friday morning to be stationed and be deployment-ready at Wallmansthal depot.
SANDF spokesperson Andries Mokoena-Mahapa said the armored vehicles would travel at 80 km per hour on the N1.
"Previously we used to outsource the repair services and used to pay a lot of money for repairs of these mambas, the joint effort with the Cubans means that we are in a position that we don't have to outsource the capability anymore. We can now respond quickly to any security instability that could happen within the country and even outside, we are ready."
"The convoy should not create an interpretation that is a declaration of war, we are not preparing for any war. We are just moving equipment from one place to another in preparation for any internal operations that we may undertake."
