We cannot assume Zuma will behave like Shaik: Duarte

President Jacob Zuma

ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte said it would be unfair to assume that former president Jacob Zuma will behave like Schabir Shaik after being granted medical parole.

Duarte made the remarks during a media briefing at the party’s Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Zuma, who is serving a 15-month jail term for contempt of court, was granted medical parole on Sunday.

The Jacob Zuma Foundation said on Tuesday that the former statesman is still in a military hospital consulting his lawyers.

Duarte welcomed the granting of medical parole to Zuma and allayed fears that this is the same way Schabir Shaik avoided jail time after he was placed on medical parole in 2009.

Shaik was Zuma’s financial advisor and was sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment for corruption and fraud.

"The Schabir Shaik behaviour may have been wrong, but we cannot assume that comrade Zuma is not ill and will behave like Schabir Shaik. I think that’s not quite right. If we see Zuma going to play golf for instance it would be a different matter. We are happy that he is out of the prison cell."
