'We deserve a university free of disrespect, hatred' - new Maties chancellor
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Former Constitutional Court Justice Edwin Cameron has expressed anger at the events at the University of Stellenbosch over the past week.
Cameron was installed as the university’s new chancellor on Wednesday.
His inaugural speech came less than a week after white student Theuns du Toit urinated on the belongings of fellow black student Babalo Ndwayana at one of the residences.
Cameron said students all deserve an institution that is free of hatred and disrespect.
“And we deserve a university to return to the rector's theme that is free of disrespect and hatred and degradation that were manifested in the ghastly incident of Huis Marais on Sunday when white student Theuns du Toit urinated on the study material of black student Babalo Ndweyana.
"All of these things are what our national sense of dignity and self-worth entitles us to object against and to claim better.”

Ndwayana has also since laid criminal charges against Du Toit, including charges of housebreaking, malicious damage to property and crimen injuria.
Du Toit has been suspended by the university while the investigation continues.
