General-Secretary, William Mabapa says they were served with a Section 189 notice yesterday.

He says they will use the consultation process to engage meaningfully to avoid job losses.

He says jobs at Beatrix Number 4 shaft in the Free State, and at the Kloof 1 and 2 plants in Gauteng, are on the line.

"We never expected this. Retrenching more than 2 500 (workers) is a very bigger number, particularly in this economic situation that we find ourselves in and [where] the rate of unemployment is high.

"We are not expecting that this is the time to shed some jobs. We expected that this is the time that we must rebuild the economy and improve employment."
