‘We will get to you’ - Makhura warns officials amid Tembisa Hospital graft probe

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has sent a stern warning to government officials involved in wrongdoing that it’s never too late to act on allegations of malfeasance.

Makhura’s comments come as his office announced the appointment of an investigator to probe the damning reports of corruption at the Tembisa hospital that may be linked to the assassination of whistleblower Babita Deokaran last year.

“In any department; any institution or in any hospital. If there is any official in government who is involved in corruption and they think today they have survived, it will get back to them. The day it gets back to them we are sure they will face the full might of the law,” Makhura said.

The premier’s office has been criticized for only acting a year after Deokaran’s murder.

At the time of her murder, Deokaran has flagged irregular payments amounting to more than R850 million at the hospital.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up around Gauteng Health Department head Nomonde Nolutshungu after she received death threats.

This follows the precautionary suspension of Gauteng Health CFO Lerato Madyo and Tembisa Hospital chief executive Ashley Mthunzi.

Makhura said the intimidation of officials tasked with rooting out corruption will not be tolerated.

“I want to say to those who are involved in these acts, whether they are in government or out there in business we will get to them and bring them behind bars.”

The premier said he is confident the Special Investigating Unit will find the truth behind the allegations at the troubled hospital.
