Western Cape ready to roll out jabs to matrics

The Western Cape Department of Education says plans are underway to use some of the mass vaccination sites in Cape Town to roll out Covid-19 jabs to matric pupils.
This comes amid efforts to get as many pupils in the 2021 matric class vaccinated before final exams later in the year, especially amid fears of a looming fourth wave of infections.
Education MEC Debbie Schäfer says this is only limited to pupils aged 18 years and older.
“It is envisaged that our district officers will engage with schools directly to arrange slots for their learners.
“Some of the learners have already been vaccinated in the national rollout,” Schäfer adds.
According to experts, there are signs the province is slowly moving past the peak of the third wave.
But the Western Cape isn’t out of the woods yet.
Schäfer says the rollout of the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson jabs for matrics is a step in the right direction.
“Vaccines really are the only way we’re going to find our way back to some semblance of normality in our sector.”
The EMS Pinelands Mass Vaccination Centre in Cape Town is among the sites that will be used.
