Western Cape sees jump in new Covid-19 cases

The number of Covid-19 cases are on the rise in the Western Cape, while there has also been a notable increase in hospitalisations across South Africa.

Statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Thursday show that Gauteng still account for the most new daily infections, but that the Western Cape has now surpassed KwaZulu-Natal with the second most new infections.

 Gauteng accounts for 34% of the total cases, while the Western Cape accounts for 23% and KZN for 15%.

 A total of 7 238 new coronavirus cases were reported in the latest 24-hour period, representing a 24.8% positivity rate.

 Meanwhile, there has been a further increase of 136 admissions across the country’s hospitals.

 To date the private sector has admitted 1 649 Covid-19 patients, while the public sector has accepted 1 634 patients as a result of the virus.
