Wet conditions hamper repairs to restore electricity supply

The City of Tshwane is experiencing some challenges with repairs to the five towers that collapsed last Thursday afternoon.

Theresa Park, Wolmer and Klerksoord have since been without power and with repair work being hampered by the wet conditions, it is now estimated that power to these areas will only be restored by Wednesday or Thursday.

The Energy and Electricity Division says it is currently replacing the five (5) towers with mono-poles but the ground is very wet and makes it difficult to plant the poles.

The power failure was caused by five (5) towers between Wolmer substation and Pretoria North that collapsed as a result of heavy storms.

Indications are that these towers were vandalised and could therefore not withstand the strength of last week’s heavy winds and rain. The Wolmer substation had to be isolated to allow the repair team to do the repair work.

The storm has caused numerous power outages across the City of Tshwane supply area. The following areas were heavily affected:

·         Pretoria North

·         Montana

·         Annlin

·         Theresa Park

·         Tileba

·         Wolmer

·         Klerksoord

·         Magalieskruin

·         Cessna

·         Sinovile

·         Doornpoort

The following areas have been restored through alternative supply points:

Pretoria North
Montana
Annlin
Tileba
Magalieskruin
Cessna
Sinovile
Doornpoort

The Energy and Electricity Division has in the meantime embarked on a temporary solution to rotate the load on six hour intervals between these affected customers.

The fault reporting center have today received 3066 calls and have already attended to 2641 calls. We are still experiencing high volume of calls due to the situation with the Wolmer substation.

It will cost the City approximately R6 million to repair the damages.

Consumers are advised to treat all electrical points “AS LIVE”
