WHO correct to declare monkeypox a global health emergency - SAMA

The South African Medical Association has welcomed the decision by the World Health Organization to declare the monkey outbreak as a global health emergency.
More than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries. There had been five deaths so far due to the outbreak.
SAMA chairperson Mvuyisi Mzukwa says WHO’s decision is smart considering the number of countries affected by the disease.
At the same time he doesn’t believe there is any reason for South Africans to panic.
“We do not foresee a rapid increase within the country, so far there are still very few cases reported which is a good sign and indicate the impact of the public measures put in place.
“South Africa was hit hard by the previous pandemic, and we learnt a lot from it therefore, to a certain extent have the means to deal with the previous pandemic.
“NICD has a surveyance of cases, isolation of cases and contact tracing to ensure that those who are exposed are monitored for systems.”
