Madikizela-Mandela passed away earlier this year.

Gauteng's Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, says between eight and ten roads in the province would be renamed.

Vadi says freeways and major routes have historically been named after heroes and leaders of the apartheid era.

"We think the time has come for us to review this carefully," says Vadi.

He believes the roads should be named after struggle icons who fought for the liberation of the people.

Vadi says it is, for this reason, the City of Johannesburg resolved to rename William Nicol Driver in honour of Madikizela-Mandela.

"We will support this motion and will make sure that it goes to the national geographic name council for consideration."

Vadi adds the Emfuleni Municipality proposed that the Old Vereeniging Road R82 should be named after political activist Duma Nokwe.

"We supported that and hope the minister of arts and culture will make a final determination on that."
