The taxi council announced its decision on Wednesday evening after failing to reach an agreement with the City of Cape Town on various issues, including the release of impounded taxis.

The strike was originally set to end on Wednesday, but Santaco extended it by 48 hours.

The taxi council has also lodged an urgent court interdict for the release of all the vehicles that were impounded by the city.

Thursday marked day eight of the strike over what Santaco believes to be the unfair impounding of their mini-bus taxis by the city.

At least five people have died while numerous industries were brought to a standstill.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde expressed his disappointment at the decision by Santaco.

“The poor are suffering the most due to this strike and each day that it drags on is a major setback to them. The impact has been devastating on them and our economy.

“It is crucial that residents are able to access critical services, such as healthcare, schooling, and social development. The violence that has accompanied the strike and severe disruptions to daily life are an affront to the dignity and rights of our residents,” said Winde.
