Winde urges Ramaphosa to send NHI Bill back to Parliament

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa not to sign into law the National Health Insurance Bill.

The province says the bill, in its current form, is unconstitutional.
The controversial bill seeks to achieve universal healthcare for all South Africans.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will sign the NHI bill into law on Wednesday after it was adopted by Parliament.
Winde says national government does not appear to have taken reasonable legislative and other measures to achieve the realisation of the right of access to healthcare services.
Winde says Ramaphosa should send the bill back to Parliament.
"The Western Cape government remains deeply concerned with the bill in its current form. It requires substantial amendments.
"We believe that the bill, as it stands, currently is unconstitutional and will prove to be unaffordable and impractical.
"We firmly believe that it will not achieve its purpose of universal health coverage which our citizens deserve. I appeal to the president to refer the bill back to Parliament for reconsideration," he said.
