ANC stalwart and former first lady of South Africa, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela confirmed in a statement that she was admitted to hospital last month.

According to the statement, Madikizela-Mandela was admitted to hospital in March for a back operation with a follow up operation scheduled for the 16th of April.


Madikizela-Mandela, who was born on the 23rd of September 1936 will be celebrating her 80th birthday later this year.


The statement read:


The African National Congress (ANC) struggle stalwart, former First Lady of the Republic of SA, former President of the ANC Women's League, former Minister of Arts and Culture, Science and Technology and the Mother of the Nation, Mrs Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was admitted in hospital on the 07th March 2016 and underwent surgery on her back on the 08th March 2016.


Mama Madikizela-Mandela is scheduled for a follow up surgery on Thursday the 16th April 2016.
