Witness protection on the cards as eThekwini mayor is granted bail
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The protection of witnesses took the spotlight after eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede received bail.
Gumede and her co-accused were granted R50 000 bail each at the Regional Commercial Crimes Court in Durban on Tuesday.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said they will take responsibility in protecting the witnesses on this case.
"We have our own operational matters to deal with. However, should there be a need to get intelligence forces to assist, we will do so.”
Gumede and her co-accused face charges ranging from corruption, fraud, money laundering and related to municipality violations.
Earlier this month nine other suspects including two eThekwini municipal managers were arrested after allegedly been given an illegal tender of R208 million in 2016 which formed part of Durban’s solid waste project.
