Wits appeals for an end to violence

Students have vowed to keep the campus gates closed. 

Wits' Acting Vice Chancellor, Tawane Kupe gave feedback after the University's Executive Council meeting and appealed for the violence to end. 

"Students threw stones at the police. Private security threw stones at the students. That is unprofessional. That conduct is being investigated and a report is almost ready. Then, we are taking it up with the company and our legal office is going to look the recourses we have," Kupe said.

The campus has been closed for the week, but students will be holding a mass-meeting again this afternoon.

Kupe said this cannot continue indefinitely.

"It's irresponsible to open to order to facilitate violence. That is why we are now reaching out to everybody to say points made, but this is not the way to make the point."
