“The court application is not against any form of protest on campus. Protests are allowed as long as they are done within parameters of the law,” said spokeswoman Shirona Patel.

“There has been incidents of vandalism and intimidation by those who do not want academic activities to continue, and police indicated they could not act against perpetrators without an interdict.”

The court application would be heard at 2pm.

The institution was relatively quite on Thursday following protests and damage to property after fires were set on campus on Tuesday. A bookshop was also burnt down.

A group of students, supported by workers at the university continued protests on Wednesday as lectures resumed. There were disruptions at a number of entrances and some lectures were interrupted as protesters went into classes, forcing students out to join in the protest against outsourcing of staff and services. The protesting students demanded frr education for all.

The university beefed up security at all entrances at its Braamfontein campus with police on standby.

A revised examination timetable would be released on Friday, the institution said. - ANA
