Wits and students - who are demanding the closure of campuses until their demand for free higher education is met - have failed to reach an agreement on the rest of the 2016 academic year.

Students want to shut down campuses until free education is implemented, while a leaked document from Wits stated that management would support students in their demand while classes continue.

Wits' proposal was rejected by protesting students, leading to management postponing the General Assembly.

Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib said at a press briefing on Friday morning that the decision was taken in the early hours of the morning.

"We were committed to a General Assembly. We were committed to working with the students, but that we wanted the resumption of the academic programme. We agreed to a phased opening. On Tuesday we brought in police. We felt that opening under a negotiated outcome, without police, without of the overt security, would be in the best interest of this institutions, of all of its students and of all of its staff. Those negotiations went on and the mediators left for home at 3.00am," he said.

Habib said there was no agreement on the format for the General Assembly.

"A council meeting will be called this weekend after which a way forward for the university will be determined. We regret any inconvenience caused."

Classes remain suspended.
