Wits remains open amid violent protests

The University of Witwatersrand is determined to remain open and will resume lectures on Tuesday despite chaos erupting on its Braamfontein campus yesterday.

Rubber bullets teargas and stun grenades were the order for the day yesterday with protesting students resolute in their call for fee, decolonized higher education.
A bus was set alight in Braamfontein while a number of shops were looted.
There was a strong police presence at Wits on Tuesday morning, while rocks and broken windows lay scattered across the campus.
On Monday violence flared up after a clash between police and students who are protesting for free higher education.

The Student Representative Council's twitter handle indicated that protesting students plan on meeting at the Great Hall piazza again on Tuesday morning.
Wits management has indicated that operational control of security is in the hands of the police who will deploy resources to parts of the campus where necessary.
