The man was shot and killed when police fired rubber bullets at the students.

Sedibe says he was called to assist after the patient was shot.

“He came in this morning at half-past ten or so. I saw him, gave him some medication and sick note and as he was walking out, unfortunately, he was met by gunshots.

“I heard the gunshot because he left my room as I was seeing another patient but inside. I could hear gunshots and my assistant came through, asked me to come and assist  because one of our patient was shot. And I went out  performed CPR to try an resuscitate him and unfortunately it was not successful, he was gasping,” he explains.

He says he heard about five or more gunshots but couldn't immediately rush out as he was busy with a patient.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemned the incident, saying the government has failed to construct a plan for funding higher education since Fees Must Fall.

“The incident of the shooting and harassment of students demanding education is a product of poor economic policy, lack of a developmental approach to education and a regime that resolves confrontations to its failures with violence.

“The EFF calls for the arrest of all police officers who were involved in an indiscriminate opening of fire on protesting students and civilians.”

Meanwhile, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) described the incident as disheartening.

“As Nehawu, we find it abhorrent that in this day of our democracy we still have police that treats peaceful marchers like it is still the dark days of apartheid.

“The use of brutal force more especially against unarmed and harmless children should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. We will write to the minister of police to demand answers in this regard.”
