Wits shutdown called off
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Wits University has tightened security ahead of exams on Friday and says police are also on standby.
This comes after the Student Representative Council (SRC) had planned a shutdown of the University, but that was called off in the early hours of Friday morning.
"We are confident that all final exams will be written today. The university will take appropriate action against anyone violating the rights of others", says Wits spokeswoman Shirona Patel.
The SRC cites students' concerns over a possible lengthening of the academic year as the main reason for the decision to suspend the protests.
Those living off campus are also concerned about the extra costs of an extended calendar.
The students had planned to protest against the findings by the leaked Fees Commission report, which is said to deem free higher education unfeasible for now.
Patel says the university has not had any discussion about fee increases for 2018 and is waiting for the release of the Fees Report.
