Wits SRC: Students across the country will join total shutdown on Monday
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The student representative council at Wits University is expected to join a total shutdown of tertiary institutions by students on Monday.
This after the South African Students Congress (Sasco) has warned of plans to shut down all institutions of higher learning.
The shutdown is part of the ongoing protests over the financial exclusion of indebted students which started at Wits.
Wits SRC president Mpendulo Mfeka says they will mobilise students from all universities to join the protest.
"We met with all SRC presidents, and we met in Pretoria and when we met there, we agreed that it is going to be a national shutdown.
"So, going into tomorrow, every university in the country is going to a standstill and we have managed to agree on helping each other. We will try to unite students from all formations to ensure that free education is realised now."
Mfeka also dismissed the conflict between members of Sasco and Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command.
"There was never a clash between students (in Braamfontein on Wednesday). There were a few demagogues who have a personal interest, who wanted to use the movement for their own selfish interest.
"So, the common goal for students has always been one and united, and it has been that they want free education, and they want it now."
