Wits students with disabilities want police, private security removed

Police and private security are monitoring the situation at lecture halls and test venues at Wits' main campus in Braamfontein and at the medical school in Parktown, where there have been more attempts to disrupt exams.

Earlier students clashed with private security in an attempt to occupy the medical campus.

Students have once again gathered on the steps of the Great Hall on the main campus.

They are joined in solidarity by workers as well as concerned black staff of the university.

Meanwhile, students with disabilities have demanded that police be removed from campuses immediately.

Students, workers and academics have also gathered in solidarity with the students with disabilities outside the Great Hall.

A representative for the students, Lehlogonolo Senono, says the militarisation of campus grounds limits their movement and makes them easy targets.

"The majority of our rooms in residences are on the ground level and when things, like teargas, are thrown in a residence it affects us most," he said.
