Wits ups security amid student protests

Wits University has deployed additional security personnel at the institution’s entrances amid student protests.
Students took to the streets on Wednesday morning, closing the institutions entrances to protest against those with historical debt not being able to register.
The SRC wants all students to be allowed to register for the new academic year.
Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel says the institution has received complaints of intimidation and damage to property.
She says the claims are being investigated.
“Campus Protection Services is also reviewing video footage and other evidence, which will be used to charge and/or suspend perpetrators, in line with the university’s rules, policies and procedures. Should you experience any intimidation, please report it to CPS via mafihla.”
Patel adds that engagements with the SRC are ongoing.
“The Dean of Student Affairs is engaging with student leaders at present to try to address some of the demands. However, a number of the issues raised are systemic issues which need to be addressed at the national level. These will be channelled to the appropriate leaders via Universities South Africa and other fora.”
