Woman in court for allegedly poisoning her children

A Pretoria woman appeared at the Moretele Magistrate’s Court on Monday, for allegedly killing her children by putting rat poison in their food.

Kgomotso Josephine Makena ,27, went on the run for almost a week before handing herself over to police on Saturday.


According to police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi the woman confessed to killing her children by putting rat poison in their breakfast, she said she also ate the food but survived.


The seven-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother were found by their father in their mother’s home on May 21, in Mokone block Stinkwater, North of Pretoria.


Moremi said they found rat poison next the bed where the children were found in a sleeping position.


“When speaking to the police in the holding cells, she alleged that indeed she used rat poison to kill her kids and also attempted to kill herself by also eating the poison,” Moremi said at the time.


Makena heard on the news that she was wanted in connection with the murder of her children and decided to hand herself to the police.


She has been charged with two counts of murder.


The matter was postponed to June 6 to allow Makena to apply for a legal representative.
