Year In Review: Student protests of 2016
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Jacaranda FM takes a look at the clashes between students and police that became the norm in 2016 as students fought for free, decolonised higher education.
Clashes and scenes of violence went viral moments after playing itself out on campuses across the country.
New leaders and voices emerged, taking charge and addressing the thousands not in class, repeating the demand at every gathering.
Behind closed doors, the decision makers met and articulated government's message at press conferences.
The message was clear: there is no way that everyone could study for free.
This view led to more anger. More disappointment. More protests…
As we bid farewell to 2016 - the inevitable happened - some universities announced their fee increases while exams had to continue because the academic year had to end.
Amid all the chaos, students returned to classes and as 2017 approaches and the doors of learning open, could we see a resurgence of an all too familiar picture.
