Young man arrested for raping elderly woman in Limpopo
Police in Limpopo have arrested a 22-year-old suspect for the rape of a 70-year-old woman in Hlanganani in the Mopani District late on Friday night.
According to reports, the 70-year-old victim was asleep with her two minor grandchildren when she was awakened by someone knocking on the door.
The elderly woman knows the suspect and opened the door for him after he had asked for a place to sleep and alleged that he had travelled from Gauteng.
The 22-year old told the woman that his house was already locked.
After allowing him in, the man allegedly started to assault the grandmother and further used a knife and panga until she was defenseless.
"The perpetrator raped the woman and afterwards robbed her of a cellphone, clothes and house keys," says police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba.
"The children screamed for help and the community swiftly responded, but the suspect managed to flee from the scene. Police and Medical Emergency Services were alerted. The victim was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
"The 22-year-old suspect was traced and arrested at his home shortly after the incident."
The suspect is expected to appear before the Tiyani Magistrates' Court on Monday, facing charges of rape and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
