Zandile Gumede hands in her resignation

The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed the resignation of eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede.

The embattled Gumede has officially stepped aside as the first citizen of eThekwini.
Gumede and her executive were recalled by the provincial structures due to poor service delivery.
Mayor-elect Mxolisi Kaunda has been named as her successor.

Gumede is currently out on bail of R50 000 bail after being accused of fraud and corruption worth millions related to a waste tender issued by the city.
“We must commend our comrades for heeding the call and displaying discipline when they so required,” says national spokesperson Pule Mabe.
Mabe however remains tight-lipped on her redeployment within the governing party.

“Wherever the ANC is going to send her to perform, any different responsibility – she will be able to hit the ground running.”
