African National Congress (ANC) chair in KwaZulu-Natal Sihle Zikalala says the “barbaric” shooting of party members in Inanda cannot be accepted.

Three women were killed in a drive-by shooting over the weekend when gunmen opened fire at a group of ANC members who were standing in a queue outside a school in Inanda, outside Durban.

It is understood that the ANC members were attending a branch committee meeting to conclude the process of selecting the candidate for Ward 54 when they were shot and killed.

Zikalala, who is also the premier of KwaZulu-Natal, visited the families of the victims on Monday.

“The incident on its own reflects barbarism and this is thuggish element that we cannot accept in the ANC,” said Zikalala.

“We have requested the police to investigate this matter, but we further call on the community to help us in investigating the matter so that we will know who was behind all of these things and those people should be brought to book.”

He vowed the ANC would help the families with the burial of the victims.

“Through the provincial office we are establishing a team that will help the families with burial support of their loved ones and we will see how we assist them to ensure that their livelihoods are established again.”
