As the country mourns the death of opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, a call to respect his views on free and fair elections has been directed at President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Tsvangirai has been laid to rest on Tuesday in his rural home village of Buhera.

The 65-year-old died last week in a Johannesburg hospital after battling colon cancer.

Jacaranda FM's Zimbabwean correspondent, Zenzele Ndebele says citizens have pleaded with President Mnangagwa to ensure Tsvangirai's call for free and fair elections is respected.

"He might be interested in making sure that the next elections will be free and fair but there are people saying that elections in Zimbabwe have always been violent."

Mnangagwa has arranged a meeting with the 84 political parties in Zimbabwe on the general election set to be held in September 2018.

"Anyone you meet in the street, even those who are not interested in politics will tell you how sad they are losing Morgan Tsvangirai," says Ndebele.
