Zuma: ANC losing power will lead to poverty

President Jacob Zuma says should the African National Congress (ANC) and the tripartite alliance partners lose support and power, the country will be gripped by poverty.

Zuma was speaking at the University of Zululand during an event to commemorate those who died in the fight for freedom.

He said ANC members who criticise the party and its members in the media are aiding foreign governments, who he says want to take control of the country.

Zuma has also dismissed claims that radical economic transformation is a tool to loot from the State.

"With (radical) economic transformation we mean a fundamental change in the structure, system, institutions and patterns of ownership. Management and control of the economy in favour of all South Africans, especially the poor and the working class. The majority of whom are African and female."

Speaking at the same event ANC chairperson in KwaZulu Natal Sihle Zikalala said no member of the ANC will ever vote to remove the president in a motion of no confidence.

Referring to last year's impeachment of former Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff, Zikalala said the revolution was under siege globally and that the ANC will not allow a right-wing agenda in South Africa.

He said ANC MPs will receive directives before a vote is held in the National Assembly.

"The NEC (National Executive Committee) of the ANC resolved on that matter. For us it is a matter that we've dealt with, it's not an issue under discussion. When we go to that sitting (in the National Assembly) there is no member of the ANC who is expected to vote otherwise. We are going to reject that motion from the opposition."
