Zuma fails in Downer, Maughan private prosecution bid
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The High Court in Pietermaritzburg has dismissed the former President Jacob Zuma’s private prosecution of News24 journalist Karyn Maughan and Advocate Bill Downer.
The former president made a brief court appearance on Wednesday morning for the judgment in his private prosecution bid.
The charges related to News24's publication of details of Zuma's medical condition, which the former president claims were leaked by Downer.
The former president obtained a private prosecution certificate after the NPA in KwaZulu-Natal declined to prosecute Downer.
In his ruling, Judge Paul Wallis said Zuma has been ordered to pay costs on attorney and client own scale, as well as the costs of two advocates.
"The respondent (Zuma) is interdicted and restrained from reinstituting, proceeding with, or from taking any further steps pursuant to, the private prosecution."
