Zuma has KZN 'laager mentality': Holomisa

President Jacob Zuma displays a "laager mentality" by appointing Cabinet members mainly from his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, according to UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, The Star reported on Tuesday.

"Zuma's appointment of the Cabinet from his own province has given an impression the IQ levels of people from other regions are low," the United Democratic Movement leader was quoted as saying.

He said this meant there was a tendency to treat people from other provinces like fools.

"You can go to the NPA [National Prosecuting Authority] head, you can go to the Cabinet, the clusters [of ministries] -- the economic clusters, social cluster and security cluster -- they are dominated by one region," he said.

"[Zuma is] suffering from a laager mentality... [which] means you surround yourself with your own," Holomisa said.

The Star reported that it had unsuccessfully tried to contact presidency spokesman Mac Maharaj for comment.

ANC spokesman Keith Khoza dismissed Holomisa's claims, saying almost all provinces were represented in the Cabinet.

"His [Holomisa's] problem is he's always thinking about who belongs where."
