'Zuma legal fees much higher that R15m'
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Former president Jacob Zuma's legal costs could have cost the South African taxpayer much more than R15 million.
President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated the figure during his first question and answer session in the National Assembly on Thursday.
But Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema believes the amount is more than the R15.3 million Ramaphosa mentioned in his answer.
"The amount you are pointing at, we don't think it that includes cases like the Nkandla case, cases like the Public Protector's (State of Capture) case. So, if you had to take almost all these cases that amount will not be accurate. Because in our own calculations, we are sitting at almost R64 million which has been paid for legal costs for the former president, the delinquent himself."
Ramaphosa said there is an agreement in place that Zuma cannot be asked to pay the costs until the Spy Tapes case is finalised.
But Malema was not happy with this answer, as he wanted to know what policy was used.
Ramaphosa promised to get back to the EFF.
"Clearly you are not satisfied with that answer because you want us to go further and look at the legal provision or the policy. Which we shall do and come back to you. We will be able to do so within a week."
