Mlungisi, affectionately known as Lungi, died in Johannesburg on Tuesday night, having undergone treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Sisulu was an activist and later a businessman who over the years was involved in a number of business ventures while involved in the African National Congress (ANC) underground structures, notably during the 1980s when he ran a small shop in Soweto, affectionately known as Shop 7, and later a poultry wholesale business, Fine Foods.

According to a statement from the Presidency, among the many roles he played in the underground structures was “harbouring UMkhonto weSizwe units in Shop 7, at great risk to himself and providing unstinting support to his brother Jongi Sisulu and other MK cadres during the terrorism trials of the 1980s”.

“South Africa has lost a dedicated and formidable patriot who was born into the struggle for the liberation of his country and became a formidable activist and leader in his own right. We wish to express, on behalf of government and the whole of South Africa, our deepest condolences to the Sisulu family, their friends and comrades in the ANC. Their loss is the nation’s loss. May his soul rest in peace,” said Zuma. - ANA
