"Our country has lost a passionate leader of the people and a seasoned agitator for gender equality," Zuma said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We wish to express, on behalf of government and the people of South Africa, our deepest condolences to her family, friends and comrades. May her soul rest in peace."

She died on Tuesday after being unwell for some time.

Ntwanambi served the African National Congress for more than 30 years in various capacities, including as an executive committee member.

She was also a founding member of the United Women's Organisation, and the Democratic Teachers Union, which later became known as the SA Democratic Teachers Union.

She joined the National Council of Provinces in 1999 and served as chairwoman of the select committee on economic and foreign affairs in 2004.

Zuma said she was an important cog in the quest for a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic South Africa in her various capacities.
