Zuma's sentencing 'greatest test' for judiciary - Zondo
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has described the sentencing of former president Jacob Zuma by the Constitutional Court in 2021 as the judiciary's greatest test to date.
Zondo addressed the opening session of the 2023 Judges' Conference in North West on Tuesday morning.
Zuma was handed a 15-month sentence for contempt of court for refusing to testify at the commission of inquiry into state capture.
His sentencing saw an unprecedented wave of violence in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, leading to the deaths of more than 300 people and billions of rands in economic losses.
Zondo said the apex court had no choice but to make a ruling it believed was correct in law.
"Threats were made in the media by people who did not want the Constitutional Court to make the decision that they believed was correct when a former president defined the Constitutional Court. That, for me, will remain one of the most important moments in the history of the judiciary."
