Zuma's testimony untrue - Maseko

Former director-general at GCIS Themba Maseko has described testimony by former president Jacob Zuma around his relationship with late minister Collins Chabane as untrue.

Maseko and Mzwanele Manyi, who both at one time served as director-general of GCIS, are set to testify at the commission of inquiry into state capture on Wednesday.

Maseko has told the commission that he was axed from his position at the government’s communication unit due to his refusal to spend money at the Gupta-linked New Age newspaper.

Manyi was hired as his successor.

The former president - during his testimony in July - denied the allegations, saying the decision to remove Maseko as director-general was made by Cabinet.

Ramaphosa: SA is an attractive investment destination

Ramaphosa opened the 2 nd annual investment conference at the Sandton Convention Centre on Wednesday, which is being attended by local and international investors. Some of the dignitaries in attendance included Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, former finance minister Mcebisi Jonas and Minister of Economic Development Ibrahim Patel.

On Wednesday the commission’s chairperson, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, asked Maseko about some of the scenarios which could lead to the transfer of a director-general.

Maseko told Zondo there could be a variety of reasons, including a breakdown in the relationship between the director-general and the minister and a transfer of skills.

But he was quick to point out that there were no issues between him and then Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane.

"My response is very clear. I think what the former president says in his oral evidence is untrue. There was never an issue between myself and Mr Chabane, we had a very strong relationship.”
