Ramaphosa sacks Jiba and Mrwebi from NPA

The Presidency has confirmed that suspended deputy National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss Nomgcobo Jiba and special director of public prosecutions Lawrence Mrwebi have been sacked with immediate effect.

The duo were axed following an inquiry into their fitness to hold office, led by retired Constitutional Court Justice Yvonne Mokgoro.
Her final report found that the pair were not fit and proper to hold office.
On Friday, the presidency said President Cyril Ramaphosa shared the report with the pair and invited them to make representations on its findings and recommendations.
"Following receipt of these representations, the president has informed advocates Jiba and Mrwebi that their tenure has ended with immediate effect."
Ramaphosa's decision will be sent to Parliament where it will have 30 days to decide whether to uphold his decision or restore the two to their positions.
"In compliance with Section 12(6) of the NPA Act, the president will furnish Parliament with documentation comprising his decision as communicated to advocate Jiba and Mrwebi, the report of the enquiry which serves as the basis for the president's decision and the submissions made by both advocates in response to the report."
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) MP and former state prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach has welcomed the decision to fire the controversial pair.
Breytenbach testified before the commission in January and told judge Mokgoro that Jiba was partly responsible for the mess at the NPA.
"This is not a moment too soon, they have both had a serious toxic effect on the National Prosecuting Authority, they have allowed it to be subverted for political purposes,” Breytenbach says.
"They have allowed state capture to flourish with no consequences and they have been instrumental in the destruction of the effectiveness of the National Prosecuting Authority.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa has ended the tenure in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of advocates Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi, as recommended by the Mokgoro Enquiry into the fitness of the two officials to hold office. https://t.co/PuKQX0rpWx
