Brave person to predict PSL champions just yet

It will take a very brave person to predict the destination of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership trophy based purely on the form books.

Absa Premiership

The fight for Absa Premiership honours appears to have evolved into a three-way tussle between Bidvest Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City.

With a game in hand over both Cape Town City and fourth-placed Kaizer Chiefs, Wits and Sundowns must still fancy their chances.

The 'Clever Boys' overcame Masandawana 1-0 on Monday evening, to steal a very slender one point march on the defending champions at the top of the table.

Maritzburg United then turned the form book upside down and edged CT City by the same margin in Pietermaritzburg, leaving 'the Citizens' two points shy of Wits.

Kaizer Chiefs dropped two critical points against fifth-placed SuperSport United at the weekend and are now five points off the pace. Their championship aspirations aren't entirely in their own hands any longer.

Sundowns it would seem, on paper, have the easier run-in, but barring an away trip to SuperSport Utd, Eric Tinkler's Cape Town side also have a seemingly easier programme. Their defeat against Maritzburg may prove to be very expensive though.

For both Wits and Sundowns, there is a maximum of 15 points on the table, with 12 up for grabs in the case of Amakhosi and City.

Wits and Sundowns both have a date with Orlando Pirates to come. The Buccaneers could prove to be a dangerous proposition as their fight continues to cement a place in the top eight, which would ensure them a spot in the lucrative MTN8 next season.

Both sides also face potential party gatecrashers Maritzburg United at home.

At this late stage of a season there is often no more dangerous a team than one fighting for their Premiership status and the potential financial implications of going down.

Wits and Cape Town City have a visit to Free State Stars to contend with, while 'Downs are at home to Baroka FC and wrap up their campaign against basement club Highlands Park.

For Steve Komphela's Chiefs, it's simply a case of doing the business and 'controlling the controlables', as so many coaches like to call it.

Their final fixture of the season against Wits on their home turf could have an impact on the final destination of the trophy.

For the rest, there are dangerous floaters to contend with which could all potentially trip them up.

City, Wits as well as Chiefs all have tricky clashes against sixth-placed Polokwane City, while City and Chiefs still have home ties against Golden Arrows to contend with.

Arrows are never scared to take aim at the top clubs and are also involved in a dogfight for top eight spot with Pirates and Ajax CT.
